The Scharffenberger Event

Ol’ Captain Scharffenberger emerged again in Porto Bello Deserted Quay, so we got to see dead people…

In previous events I tried to get there as fast as possible, but was unfortunately always a tad too slow. Today I was actually leveling in Deserted Quay, so I could be at the right place in time. Before Scharffenberger made his big entry, we had to defeat several waves of his minions. Being a low-level event (with 50 I juuuust made the cut), this was surprisingly easy.

The really cool thing happened afterwards, when the loot was "distributed" (read: a gamemaster dropped costumes on the ground). I managed to grab one for my scout (Mercenaries Mercy) - which looks similar to the dress I already have, only in a different color: Pretty slick, nevertheless, and I was happier than a pig in the mud.

the old costume (in white)

the new costume (blue-grey)

And by now I also managed to gain all Siegmund vouchers in Porto Bello again. Let’s see what the reward will be this time…

Siegmund Vouchers

Yay, I finally was able to collect all Siegmund vouchers in Porto Bello. Let’s see what the reward will be… Six XP cards. Meh.

In other news: my three main characters hit level 50 today - hooray! I guess it’s really time to post some pictures.

My question in the official forums for other SotNW-related blogs came up empty so far. But, nevertheless, here is a list of (I think) interesting blogs about the various eastern versions… in no particular order:

Nine Moons Family
Crest of Rose and Thorn
The Diary of Sigrid
Granado Espada
Elquines in sgGE
Hrin’s GE blog

Updates from the New World

Just like I thought - it’s rather hard to do blog updates while advancing with your family. So a lot has happened since the last entry. And instead of splitting it up into multiple posts, I’ll try to catch up in one.

First, the family has grown to eight people now. Beside the three main characters (Ariana the fighter, Holli the scout, and Betany the wizard) a number of NPCs have now joined the team.

Second, as the adventures are progressing, experience was gained. Now the level of the major characters is 46, while the rest is around the mid and lower 30s.

Third, I’m a member of a clan (ShadowLords) now *g*

And the result is…

2 level - guess I picked not an optimal spot…

Level Up! (Or not?)

I will be out the entire day, so I figured I will do what seemingly everyone else does…

My family (now Level 25) will be placed in a strategic location on Tetra Hill, helping secure the Port of Coimbra. Any maybe complete a quest or two while they’re at it (collect High-end Cabosse for chocolate and eliminate 200 Lazim-Iam).

Reviews

Hm, maybe I should have read what the critics had to say about SotNW (overall reviews seem to be mixed, some like it a lot, other detest it):

"So the guys generally look a lot like metrosexual butlers, and the gals resemble riverboat prostitutes." (Gamespot review)

"Amidst the frightfully boring kill quests and some others so vague that they became infuriating [...] there are some pretty sweet instances." (IGN review)

Both nail it pretty much on the head. I like the player models somehow, but I could do with less(!) grinding. Alas, the 5th season of Alias should arrive in a few days, so my family can hack away while I enjoy myself…

Al Quelt Moreza

Venturing deep into the Al Quelt Moreza dungeon, I learn a lot (and I fear that the name of the dungeon puts me on some secret "connected-to-terrorists" list).

For example that you don’t really need to play the game to play the game. I guess SotNW is one of the few games that plays itself…

Reboldoeux

Reboldoeux, a city where you need to copy and paste the name to get it right…

After arriving in the city the first task is to create the rest of the family. Up to three people can be part of the party at any time, and a fourth member waits in the quarters. So two more people: a scout (assassin and healer) and, finally, a mage. My fighter covers close combat, the mage ranged combat, and the scout heals them when necessary. Very efficient.

Memo to self: post family picture.

Into a new world

Ah, the wonders of a new experience!

Continuing my SotNW saga, the first "challenge" is to - pick a server. I used the time during downloading, installation, and updating to read the more prominent posts in the game’s forum. But really, there is not much choice yet… only one server for DE, so "Illier" it is.

So I’m a MMORPGer now.

Never thought this would happen. I was cleaning up my harddrive, so I had time to watch a few videos on the latest GameStar DVD. And one of them was a presentation of "Sword of the New World" (SotNW from now on).

The graphics looked good. The overall style is somehow Victorian-SciFantasy-Magic, reminding me of Final Fantasy 8 (the only FF game I have). You could call it Steam-Punk, if you like. The music was said to be a mix of classical tunes and techno. And finally, it was said to be free until level 20.
