Sword of the New World: Granado Espada
So I’m a MMORPGer now.
Never thought this would happen. I was cleaning up my harddrive, so I had time to watch a few videos on the latest GameStar DVD. And one of them was a presentation of "Sword of the New World" (SotNW from now on).
The graphics looked good. The overall style is somehow Victorian-SciFantasy-Magic, reminding me of Final Fantasy 8 (the only FF game I have). You could call it Steam-Punk, if you like. The music was said to be a mix of classical tunes and techno. And finally, it was said to be free until level 20.
I love RPG, either pen and paper (e.g. DSA, Shadowrun) or solo play (e.g. Neverwinter Nights). Yet MMORPG never tickled my fancy for one reason: monthly payments. If I buy the game, I buy it, and that’s the end of the story. I totally understand why MMORPG cost money with all the servers, support, patches, etc. And I understand why people play MMORPG. I’m just not one of them. But free (as in beer)… well, can’t hurt to take a look. I admit: I’m a sucker for free stuff.
I was pleasantly surprised to see on the page that SotNW is now completely free. Free to download, free to play, no limitations. This is getting better by the minute! So I created an account, easy enough, headed to the download section. Over 3Gig to download. My dear. Nothing BitTorrent and a few hours time can’t handle. Installed, sucked another 5-10 minutes for latest updates, and I’m set. Whoopie!
Next: my first steps in a new world (literally).
